Medicine + Technology + Art

This week's lecture focuses on medical advancements and the impact it has on art. At first, I was a bit confused as to how medicine and anatomical science and technology impacts art. However, I was really intrigued to hear about Professor’s experience with the two concepts. At the art school she attended, there was a strong focus on anatomy and anatomic drawing, which led her to think she was wasting her time (Lecture Part 1). However, a decade later, she was happy to find out that the classes were actually going to help her in her work.  Having the knowledge of bone structure and anatomy helped her with her contemporary art. I think this antidote from Professor goes to show the juxtaposition of art and science.

I can't help but think about Grey's Anatomy when thinking of the unity of art and medicine. The film, an art, explores the lives of surgeons in a hospital. Something that makes the show so fascinating is the creativity of patients and the knowledge of the actors and lines they perform. It seems as though there is really a doctor there teaching them how to go about movements on screen and describing injuries and prognosis'. In this way, the actors learn about science and the anatomy to further perform their art, acting. This class never fails to intrigue me in uniting art with something I wouldn't expect and I loved learning about Professor Vesna's experience through it all!

  1. Hi Kate! I really enjoyed reading your blog. I think the intersection of anatomy and art is really interesting too. Artists always seem to have an innate understanding of the human body that connection with medicine seems to be inherent. I also love Grey's Anatomy. It may not be entirely accurate, but it is many people's first experience with medicine. Great job!

  2. Hi Kate, I really loved your blog! I also was a bit confused about how art, technology, and medicine work together as one, but after this week's lecture, I can't seem to not think of them as one unit! It is so interesting how you connected this with Grey's Anatomy, as it is truly at the intersection of these fields! great work Kate
